A military court at Yundum Army Barracks has sentenced two soldiers to 3 year jail-term for plotting to overthrow the government of President Adama Barrow.
According to a Whatsapp chat group called “The True Friends”, Sulayman Kujabi and Lamin Kujabi, discussed ways and means of staging a coup with other members of the Gambian army while on a 2017 peacekeeping mission in Sudan region of Darfur .
According to Court-Martial the soldiers were found guilty and sentenced to a three-year jail term.
They are Warrant Officer Class One Sulayman and Lance Corporal Lamin were charged in November 2018 before the court-martial with incitement to mutiny, conspiracy to commit mutiny and endeavor to persuade soldiers to take part in the mutiny.
The soldiers who have been convicted of mutiny and conspiracy to commit mutiny have been dismissed from the army.
This is the second batch of soldiers who were jailed on charges of mutiny. In May this year, seven soldiers were sentenced to nine years on charges of mutiny and others.
