Dr. Mariatou Jallow, former chief executive of the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH), who testified before the Truth, Reconciliation and Compensation Commission, revealed that former dictator Yahya Jammeh was lying to Gambians about his claims of HIV / AIDS Treatment of , hypertension, asthma and tuberculosis.
However, she stated that the difficulties faced by the victims of 10/11 April 2000 were a failed system of government and hospital administration as a whole.
To describe the incident, she said she was the chief executive of the hospital at the time, and that day she received a call while she was in her office. Many people were taken to hospital with serious injuries and bleeding.
“Doctors and nurses have been mobilized, the theater has been equipped and those in need of blood have been facilitated. The dead were arranged in total 14 in the morgue. One of the victims was included in the bodies of the dead, in which he did not die, but this failed by doctors because they had to perform the examination correctly. “
She said some patients did surgery and others admitted. He added that the medical papers of the patients were seized through an order from the state headquarters, which she thought was from Jammeh.
Acknowledging that these instructions were wrong, she said that she did so out of fear because anything would have happened to her if she had refused the instructions.
Jammeh came to the hospital to examine the patients, but the patients were not happy and did not talk to him, and as a result, they thought he had a hand in the incident. He ordered three people for treatment abroad in Egypt, funded by the state. In the incident, the government failed to provide the victims needs with regard to their treatment. ”
She apologized to all patients if they felt that she had abused them but confirmed that she was trying to save them.
